My bath towels have been smelling lately.  Like mildew.

It's disgusting, and a total bummer to rub stinky, smelly towels all over your freshly cleaned body.

I want my towels to smell like this:

Not this:

Brooke told me to put baking soda in my wash.  Lots of it.

So I did.  Lots of it.

Now my towels smell like mildewed cookies.

Anyone have any suggestions, or is it time for a trip to Bed, Bath and Beyond?

  1. I love vinegar in the rinse, and I suspect that will help with the mildewy smell.

You could also add some essential oil to the vinegar. I like peppermint or lemon. About 1-2 drops per half-gallon.

  2. Yep, Jen is right. Use white vinegar in the rinse cycle. If your washer has a liquid fabric sofenter dispenser, just add 1/4 white vinegar to the softner dispenser when you start your load, wash like normal and the smell will be gone. It acts like a softner too!

(If you do not have a dispenser, just pay attention and when your washer reaches the rinse cycle, open the lid and add it in.)

  3. I second the vinegar and essential oils. Once dry you cannot smell the vinegar.

    Hope it works!

  4. I love that you posted this!!! I have the same problem!!! I even tried washing them one at a time on different cycles with different detergents! I was on the verge of buying all new towels too...I'll try the vinegar first. Thanks for posting this, now I know I'm not the only one with this weird issue :)

  5. I work at Macy's and my specialized area is towels. I've learned that you should NEVER use liquid fabric softener on your towels. Either using a fabric softening sheet or air drying is the best for towels. When you use liquid fabric softener it contains oils and fats in it that clogs the towels twists and the cotton in them so they can't absorb water and do their job as a towel and when the fabric softener is scented it sticks around in the cotton and starts to smell. And when you go to wash the the next time the water can't flow to clean it because it's clogged and of course water and oil don't mix. The best thing for your towels is air because cotton blooms in air.

Try this: buy 2 new towels, use one normally but leave the second one in your closet and don't touch it. you'll find over time the one you don't use will actually be softer because of how the cotton had time to bloom more.

  7. Do you have a front load washer? If so, read on, if not, nevermind. :) I had that problem with smelly towels awhile ago and I discovered it was my washer. Apparently, older front load washers have problems with mold and mildew because the tub never fully drains. A hot wash cycle with ample bleach will take care of that. I do my whites first now. Also, leave the washer door ajar when not in use.
